I'm a mathematics teacher at Tiffin School, offering private mathematics tuition in the London area, covering KS2, KS3, KS4 and KS5 (including Further Maths), and catering for the full range of ability levels.
I was a former undergraduate, PhD student and admissions tutor at Oxford University, graduating with a 1st class degree. I received an 'Outstanding' rating in the last lesson I was observed by a former HMI (Her Majesty's Inspector). Similarly, in 2012, I received an Oxford University Teaching Excellence Award (of which only 4 such awards were issued within the Maths, Engineering and Science faculties combined) from the Vice-Chancellor for my contributions to both departmental and college teaching.
The resources on my website are used by tens of thousands of teachers and students across the country. In November 2015 I appeared in the Times Educational Supplement as the featured resource author of the month, and I have been an invited speaker on multiple occasions at the 'Mathematics in Action' events at the Institute of Education in London, speaking to A Level students and teachers, alongside speakers such as broadcaster/writer Simon Singh.
I have tutored a large variety of students, from school Year 5 to Further Maths, with a variety of ability levels. Many students have shown outstanding improvements in attainment: in 2015 for example, one student, despite not being in top set, received the second highest mark in the year in end of year exams. Two further students moved up a set. Numerous others exceeded school predicted grades, sometimes by several grades. For younger students, my teaching style consists of three fundamental elements: cementing school curriculum knowledge by giving an in depth understanding of the material, enriching knowledge by exploring theory beyond the curriculum, and thirdly, promoting an intellectual curiosity and love of mathematics via the exploration of interesting mathematical puzzles and problems. I also have experience working with lower ability students, for example maintaining a regular focus on core numeracy skills and mental arithmetic strategies whilst helping them grapple with the more abstract areas of mathematics.
For older students, I have knowledge and experience of a variety of exam boards, including EdExcel, AQA, OCR, OCR MEI and the IGCSE qualification. Two of the students I tutored last academic year got 100% in one of the A Level modules I tutored them in (C2 and C4). All 4 GCSE students I tutored outside of school in 2014 received A* in Maths, one A* with Distinction in IGCSE Further Maths. I specialise in exams for Gifted and Talented students, including STEP, Maths Challenges and the Mathematical Olympiads. For the last of these, I have worked with several students within the top 50 nationally, both in and out of school. As of 2014 I tutor one student who was on the national winning team of four in the UK Mathematics Trust Team Maths Challenge, out of 1750 entrant schools. I have been part of my own school's rise in success in national competitions, including for example in the Junior Maths Challenge, going from 5 to 11 to 17 Olympiad qualifiers each year across the last three years, now putting Tiffin in the top few in the country. In the recent Regional Final of the Senior Team Maths Challenge (Nov 2015), who I coached, the team achieved 180 out of a maximum score of 180.
Please note that I do NOT offer 11+ tuition for any state grammar schools, and can not tutor existing Tiffin students.
